1. Logging on to RDS
To use Remote Desktop Services (RDS) you will need the Microsoft Remote Desktop app installed on your computer. It is built into all Windows computers and is installed on all school iMacs
If you are connecting to RDS from an personal Apple computer which doesn’t have the RDS app, it is available for free from the AppStore.
There are two methods of connecting to RDS, either by configuring the Remote Desktop app or using the web portal. For teaching and support staff using RDS from the same machine each time please configure the Remote Desktop client as this will be quicker for you to connect to RDS going forward. Students using RDS in the computer suites should use the web portal method so skip to section 1.2.
1.1 Connecting to RDS via Remote Desktop Client
Open the Microsoft Desktop client.
Click the “Remote Resources” button and enter the details as below using your RGS email address and password, then click refresh. You should see a message saying “Successfully loaded Remote Resources” after clicking refresh.
Close the Remote Resources window and you will now see a heading called Remote Resources with an icon called Desktop below it. Double click Desktop to load RDS. Skip to section 3 for instructions on using RDS.
1.2 Connecting to RDS via Web Portal
Browse to the following website https://remote.rgsw.org.uk which is also available under the Portals menu on Schoolweb (RDS) and login using your RGSW email address and password.
Once logged in, click the Desktop icon.
Your web browser will now download a file, click the downloads button and double click on the download (the downloaded file will have a name ending in .rdp).
Once you have double clicked on the downloaded file, the Remote Desktop client will open. Please re-enter your RGS email address and password in the boxes at the top of the screen.
3. Using RDS
You will find shortcuts to applications on the desktop. You cannot save documents to the desktop. Please save any documents to your home folder (U:) or shared area (S:). To browse to these locations click Start and select File Explorer.
To log out of the server please click the User icon as circled below and select Sign Out.
