We have for a long time relied upon Mobile syncing for staff laptops. This in essence duplicates your files and folders on the network. The reason for this was twofold, firstly it was a backup option and secondly it would allow you to logon to any computer at RGS and see all of your files.
We have for a long time been seeking a faster, more reliable and less frustrating method of backing up your data. We have after much searching and testing decided upon a program called Crashplan.
This program quietly sits in the background and at first use will backup all of your data. Once this has completed, it will then backup files automatically in the background as new files are created or amended. There will be no more syncing at login and logout, backup will occur without you even noticing.
A major benefit is that you can restore files from a particular date or time, for example if you created a document at 9am, amended this at 10:00am and accidentally removed content and saved the document. You can restore a copy of the file from 9am.
The introduction of this will mean that if you do login to a desktop computer, your files will now not be available. Having spoken to staff this appears not to be an issue, you do have any queries then please speak to a member of the team.
We have already installed the software on your laptops. It just requires a minute of your time to open the Crashplan app and enter your details, please see instructions below.
Please note: Backups will also happen whilst you are at home.
Configuring the backup
Step 1: Locate 'Crashplan' in the Applications folder and double click it.
Step 2: Enter your First name, Last name, RGS Username & RGS Password, the server address will be automatically completed. Click Create account.
Step 3: In the files section, please check that the folder being backed up is the folder containing your files, this should be the folder with your initials. If it does not show your initials here, please click Change.
This next page displays the content that will be backed up. If your files are not correctly selected, untick the current selection, browse to locate your Home folder. This will either be located in Data - Users or Macintosh HD - Users. Click Save.
Step 4: Click Start backup. At this point you can close this window and let the backup happen in the background. If you close the lid on your laptop, the backup process will automatically continue when you open it again
